The process of digestion and the passage of intestinal contents normally takes twelve to twenty-four hours. In thirty percent of people with constipation, intestinal transit is delayed, and the problem is caused by the rectum not emptying easily. Slow transit is associated with impaired function of the nerve cells in the rectum that control movement. Constipation is characterised by slow bowel movements with hard, dry stools, and you may only need to go to the toilet once every three days—or less often—to pass stool. There is often an urge to go, but no stool is passed, which can cause an unpleasant feeling in the abdomen. Hard stools can also alternate with soft, unformed stools. Constipation occurs twice as often in women as in men. Adults and children who are overweight are also twice as likely to experience this condition. Some people have suffered from constipation since childhood, while in others it develops later in life.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Overweight and diabetes
Of all people with gastrointestinal complaints, one quarter suffer from constipation. Adults and children who are overweight are twice as likely to experience this condition. Constipation is one of the most common complaints associated with overweight and diabetes. Emptying of the bowel takes twice as long, and neurological disorders of the bowel also play a role. Research indicates that many people who are overweight produce four times as much methane. These gases can cause flatulence and belching. Methane levels can be measured in the breath. The bacterial species Methanobrevibacter produces methane gas, which slows intestinal transit. The problems increase with age. By around the age of 80, more than 70% of people have very slow bowel function.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Symptoms of constipation

A bloated feeling

Abdominal pain or cramps

Dry, hard or pellet-like stools

Straining

Unproductive urge to defecate

Stool leakage

A feeling of incomplete emptying

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Tests for constipation

For persistent constipation, stool testing through Darmklachten.nl can help investigate the cause. Causes of constipation include:

Fear of pain during bowel movements due to anal fissures or haemorrhoids

Pelvic floor disorders

Spinal cord injury or neurological diseases

Gluten intolerance (coeliac disease)

Food allergies
An allergy is often not considered when stools are too hard, yet a food, soy or cow’s milk allergy can be the cause. Lactose, wheat, onions and sorbitol contain sugars that are poorly absorbed and can therefore contribute to symptoms.

Infection with intestinal parasites
Constipation alternating with diarrhoea may indicate an intestinal parasite infection, such as Dientamoeba fragilis and Blastocystis hominis

Colon cancer
A changing bowel pattern can occur with colon cancer

Pregnancy
During pregnancy, about one quarter of women experience constipation

An underactive thyroid:

Age
By around the age of eighty, more than seventy percent of people have very slow bowel function.

Work-related factors
Holding in stool for too long can slow intestinal transit, particularly in occupations such as drivers and teachers.

Overweight and diabetes
Constipation is one of the most common complaints associated with overweight and diabetes, and emptying of the bowel takes twice as long. Diabetes can cause neurological problems and may play a role in bowel emptying. High methane production in the intestine can also cause constipation, and people who are overweight appear to produce on average four times as much methane.

Depression and stress
A bloated abdomen, gas or constipation often occur together with depressive feelings. The intestines send signals to the brain through the blood and nerve pathways, and our behaviour and moods are influenced by signals originating in the gut. Gut bacteria and inflammatory substances present in the intestine have a major influence on the brain. The intestinal wall, for example, produces serotonin, which affects intestinal peristalsis. Toxic by-products of gut bacteria that enter the bloodstream also affect the brain.

Medication use
Painkillers and medicines that can cause constipation include:

Codeine (including cough syrup containing codeine)

Morphine

Antidepressants

Some anti-inflammatory medicines

Blood pressure-lowering medicines

Antihistamines

Iron supplements

Antacids

Long-term use of laxatives

Hirschsprung’s disease or cystic fibrosis
These conditions are present from birth or develop in the first weeks of life and can manifest as constipation. Narrow, ribbon-like stools may indicate a malformation of the anus. Weakness of the lower limbs, delayed motor development or problems with toilet training can cause slow bowel movements. In young children, a milk allergy is common and can cause severe constipation.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”bullet_blue”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

More water, more exercise
The standard advice for constipation is to drink more water and exercise more. In almost all cases, high-fibre foods or a fibre product are prescribed. This appears to be of no benefit and in recent years has even been described as a myth. The process of digestion and elimination of intestinal contents normally takes 12 to 24 hours. Delayed transit can be investigated in hospital. In 30 percent of people with constipation, intestinal transit is delayed. In most cases, however, the constipation is caused by the rectum not emptying easily. Slow transit is associated with impaired function of the nerve cells in the intestinal wall that control movement and act, as it were, as the pacemaker of the bowel. Scientists indicate that fibre is not a solution for constipation because it increases the volume and therefore the blockage. As with a traffic jam, the inflow needs to be reduced; a low-fibre intake and consequently a reduction in stool volume may be beneficial.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

More information about the tests

Digestive parameters: pH, fat, starch, colour and stool consistency – read more…

Intestinal parasites – Testing for infections with intestinal parasites – read more…

Gut flora analysis – Analysis of part of the gut microbiota – read more…

Antigliadin and anti-tTG transglutaminase – Markers for gluten intolerance – read more…

Histamine intolerance – Testing for absence of the enzyme diamine oxidase – read more

Antigliadin and anti-tTG transglutaminase – Markers for gluten intolerance – read more…

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]About Darmklachten.nl[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1617007411960{margin-top: 16px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]Darmklachten.nl is an initiative of MGlab&Advies, a laboratory specialising in stool testing. …read more[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row el_id=”afwijkende-stoelgang-verstopping”][vc_column][vc_column_text] What you need to know about constipation If you are only able to pass stool once or a few times a week, this is referred to as constipation.
