With dumping syndrome, food that has not yet been sufficiently digested reaches the small intestine in pieces. This can cause a range of unpleasant gastrointestinal reactions. On this page, Darmklachten.nl provides more information about dumping syndrome. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

What causes dumping syndrome?

Dumping syndrome is almost always the result of surgery in which part or all of the stomach has been removed, such as a gastric bypass. Sometimes the symptoms are caused by damage to the nerve that controls the stomach, the vagus nerve. Two symptom patterns can be distinguished in dumping syndrome:

Early dumping symptoms: these occur shortly after a meal and may be noticeable within half an hour.

Late dumping symptoms: these occur approximately one to three hours after a meal.

The two symptom patterns can occur together or separately.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]
REQUEST A TEST NOW
[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Early dumping symptoms

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1617007416560{margin-top: 16px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]Early dumping symptoms occur because food reaches the small intestine in pieces that are too large. Normally, food is first thoroughly ground and mixed in the stomach before being passed to the small intestine in small portions. Early dumping symptoms therefore occur when the stomach does not break the food down sufficiently. A poorly functioning sphincter that allows too much food through at once can also cause these symptoms. It then passes to the small intestine in small portions, when the small intestine is ready to receive it. Late dumping symptoms occur because the small intestine is not yet ‘ready’. The pieces of food are still too large and reach the small intestine too quickly. The digestive juices needed—bile and pancreatic juices—are then not yet present in sufficient amounts in the small intestine.

How can you recognise early dumping syndrome?

During early dumping, highly concentrated food in the small intestine attracts a large amount of fluid. This fluid is drawn from the surrounding blood vessels. In some cases this can amount to three to four litres. This can cause:

a feeling of fullness

abdominal pain and intestinal cramps

diarrhoea

Because so much fluid is drawn from the blood vessels, your blood pressure falls. This can cause symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, weakness and drowsiness.

How can you recognise late dumping syndrome?

If part or all of your stomach has been removed, food reaches your small intestine much faster. As a result, insulin production and the rise in blood sugar after eating are no longer properly synchronised. Sugars are absorbed very quickly. A high blood sugar level requires insulin, but the insulin response starts too late, so insulin may still be produced after the sugar has already disappeared from the bloodstream. This resembles low blood sugar, as can occur in people with diabetes. You may experience the following symptoms:

sweating

restlessness and trembling

dizziness

intense hunger (eating something small can raise your blood sugar slightly and may reduce the symptoms)

palpitations

sometimes fainting.

How can dumping symptoms be reduced?

The following tips may help reduce dumping symptoms:

Eat slowly, take small bites and chew well

Do not drink with meals, including soup. Wait at least 30 minutes before and after a meal before drinking

Avoid very cold or very hot foods

Avoid rapidly absorbed sugars, which are found in soft drinks, fruit juices, sweet snacks and sweet spreads

Avoid high-fat foods

Eat plenty of fibre from wholegrain products, oatmeal, dietary fibre, etc.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

About Darmklachten.nl

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1617007411960{margin-top: 16px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]Darmklachten.nl is an initiative of MGlab&Advies, a laboratory specialising in stool testing. …read more[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Gastrointestinal problems caused by rapid gastric emptying People with dumping syndrome experience excessively rapid emptying of the stomach—literally a ‘dumping’ of food.
