This is of course very unpleasant. Food poisoning may be the cause. Your food may contain bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites that can make you ill. But what can you do about it? And how can you get rid of the symptoms as quickly as possible? Darmklachten.nl explains more. Read on to find out what you can do if you have eaten something bad.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Causes of food poisoning

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]If you have eaten something bad, you can develop food poisoning. In most cases, bacteria in food make you ill. Examples include Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria or E. coli. How can these bacteria make you ill? Some possible causes are:

You first cut raw chicken on a chopping board and then use the same chopping board for the vegetables in your salad. The bacteria from the raw chicken are transferred to the vegetables, which you then eat.

You buy organic lettuce contaminated with E. coli bacteria and do not wash it properly.

You buy sushi at the supermarket but do not put it in the fridge. Outside the fridge, bacteria have the opportunity to grow. Also, do not keep the sushi in the fridge for too long.

You do not cook meat, fish or shellfish properly. The bacteria in these products are only really killed once the meat, fish or shellfish is fully cooked.

You eat meat, fish or shellfish after its use-by date. The food is then no longer safe.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

What can you do yourself if you have eaten something bad?

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Do you think you have developed food poisoning because you ate something bad? First wait calmly and see how you feel. You will often start to feel a little better fairly quickly. Always listen carefully to your own body. Do you notice that you are getting hungry? Try eating a little again, in small portions. Are you thirsty? Have something to drink. Keep drinking plenty of water as well. If you vomit a lot or have diarrhoea, your body loses fluids. It is therefore important to drink enough water.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

When you should contact your GP

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Do your symptoms not go away after you have eaten something bad? In the following situations, it is better to contact your GP:

You feel drowsy, become confused or feel as though you are going to faint

You have watery diarrhoea (6 or more times a day) and this has lasted for three days or longer

You continue to vomit and/or vomit severely

You have persistent abdominal pain

You drink too little

You have not urinated for a day

There is blood or mucus in your stool

You use diuretics or medicines for high blood pressure. These are sometimes advised against during food poisoning

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Would you like to know more about laboratory testing?
