The Candida diet may offer a solution. The Candida diet can help slow the growth of yeasts such as Candida. An increase in Candida in the intestine is often associated with a reduction in the diversity of the gut flora. To find out the condition of your gut flora, you can have a laboratory test carried out. This examines the numbers of healthy gut bacteria in the intestines. A larger number of Candida yeasts in the intestine can cause symptoms. By following the Candida diet, you can help prevent an increase in Candida cells. Starchy products are omitted from the diet. A decrease in the number of Candida yeasts helps symptoms such as gas and bloating disappear. The diet restores the gut flora and increases the number of beneficial bacteria.

What is Candida?

Candida are types of yeast that belong to the fungi. The term ‘Candida’ is often used to refer to a medical problem, namely an increase in yeasts in certain organs. In many cases, this means Candida overgrowth in the intestine. This can cause symptoms such as a bloated abdomen, flatulence and fatigue. Having these symptoms does not automatically mean that you have ‘Candida’. This diagnosis can only be established by laboratory testing. We recommend always combining a yeast culture with a gut flora analysis, because yeasts can be cultured effectively.

Different types of Candida

Candida belongs to the class Saccharomyces, which also includes baker’s yeast. A Candida species is found in more than 20% of stool analyses. There are different species of Candida: Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida krusei and Candida parapsilosis. A stool test can determine the different species. In 71% of cases, C. albicans is involved. Other species are C. krusei 3.4%, C. parapsilosis 2% and C. glabrata 1.6%. Baker’s yeast or a fruit yeast is sometimes found.

Symptoms associated with Candida

If you have Candida overgrowth in the intestine, you often experience flatulence and a bloated abdomen. These symptoms increase when you consume starchy products and sugar. You may also experience fatigue, itching or a foggy feeling in the head, as well as cravings for sweet foods. In women, an increase in yeasts in the intestine often occurs together with Candida in the vagina. This is also called a vaginal fungal infection. Candida can also occur on the skin, in the mouth, oesophagus or on the tongue. In men, Candida overgrowth may occur on the penis or in the urethra.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

What causes Candida-related symptoms?

The numbers of Candida in the intestine, mouth and vagina often increase after antibiotic treatment. This increase is also often accompanied by a decrease in the numbers of healthy gut bacteria. There are, however, other causes of an increase in Candida. We list a number of them below:

Use of the contraceptive pill

Overweight: this is often associated with an increase in yeasts in the intestine, especially in diabetes and with excessively high insulin and blood-sugar levels

Intestinal parasites: an increase is often seen with infection by the parasite Dientamoeba fragilis

Excessive alcohol consumption

Low resistance, illness and chemotherapy

Intestinal diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis

Newborn babies may develop a mild form of thrush, usually during the first four weeks of life. This does not necessarily require medical treatment

Overweight

Yeasts in the intestine often increase in people who are overweight. They often have high insulin levels. When they eat starchy foods, the glucose level in the blood rises. This also raises the insulin level. The high insulin levels in turn cause the sucrose level in the intestine to rise. There is a clear association between high insulin levels, an increase in the sugar content of the intestine, abnormalities of the gut flora and an increase in Candida. This explains why people who are overweight and have type II diabetes often suffer from Candida infections of the intestine, mouth or vagina.

Testing for gastrointestinal complaints

Do you have gastrointestinal complaints? We then recommend a stool test. This test determines the numbers of Candida together with a gut flora analysis. This makes it possible to establish how many yeasts are present and whether there is an increase. More than half of people do not have large numbers of yeasts in the intestine. Many people with a strong increase in intestinal yeasts also have symptoms. In our laboratory, we often see a strong increase in Candida species in people infected with single-celled intestinal parasites, especially Dientamoeba fragilis. In many cases, Candida numbers decrease after successful treatment for the parasite.

Vaginal fungal infection due to Candida overgrowth

Low resistance and the use of antibiotics can also lead to Candida overgrowth. Candida overgrowth regularly occurs in the vagina in women. In that case, a swab can be taken by removing a small amount of fluid with a cotton swab. Men can also develop overgrowth in other places, for example discharge from the urethra or itching. A swab can also be taken in these cases. This is also advisable if your female partner has symptoms of Candida overgrowth. Do you have symptoms involving the tongue or oral mucosa, or are white patches visible? Then have a swab taken from the oral mucosa. Itching around the anus may also be associated with Candida overgrowth.

Rhodotorula rubra

When stool is examined, other yeasts besides Candida are also found, for example Rhodotorula rubra. This yeast is found mainly in the intestines of people who eat a lot of overripe fruit and use fruit salads that have not been freshly prepared. Research shows that of 38 commercially available fruit salads examined (melon, citrus fruits, honeydew melon, pineapple, strawberries), 97% contained Rhodotorula rubra. Of the pasteurised fruit juices (apple, carrot, grapefruit, grape and orange juice, apple cider) and soya milk, 22% were found to contain a yeast. Rhodotorula rubra may also be present in mixed vegetable packages.

The Candida diet

To prevent an increase in yeasts such as Candida, you can follow the Candida diet.
The Candida diet is broadly similar to a low-starch diet. This means that you should not only omit bread and wheat products but are also better off avoiding grains such as pasta, muesli and rice. Grains consist of more than 60% starch. Starch is made up of glucose molecules, and glucose is an important source of nutrition for yeasts.

How do you follow the Candida diet?

Do not eat:
Omit grains, sugar, sweet fruit, fruit juices and sweeteners from the diet. This also means no biscuits, sweets, hidden sugars added to foods, or alcohol.

What can you eat?
The diet should be rich in vegetables, fats and proteins. For example, eat broth, oily fish, chicken, eggs, game and culinary herbs such as garlic, oregano, rosemary, turmeric2 and ginger2. Shiitake mushrooms and smoothies with washed berries also fit the diet; these have a low sugar content.

If you choose broth, make your own broth from bones. The soup then contains glucosamine, which improves the resistance of the mucus layer and reduces the growth of Candida1. Shiitake also inhibit the growth of yeasts (do not use button mushrooms!). Feel free to contact Darmklachten.nl for more information about healthy foods that fit this diet.

Planning the Candida diet

If you choose a Candida diet, it is important to plan it properly. For breakfast, for example, make a vegetable smoothie of your choice with coconut water or yoghurt, a vegetable omelette, avocado with lettuce or stir-fried vegetables. For lunch and dinner, you can choose soups or a meal salad. Combine this with proteins such as fish, chicken or eggs. Of course, do not eat too one-sidedly; choose a rotation diet.

Treatment and follow-up for Candida

When Candida increases, changing the diet is an important way to treat Candida overgrowth in the intestine, mouth and vagina. After following a strict Candida diet for 4 weeks, repeat the gut flora and Candida stool test. If the Candida numbers have not decreased sufficiently through the diet, you can discuss this with your treating doctor. In some cases, it may be useful to prescribe medication, for example nystatin. Scientific research shows that following a low-starch diet also strongly reduces Candida. Even with medical treatment, the Candida diet remains very important.

Benefits of the Candida diet

Eating vegetables and broth increases the number of beneficial bacteria and decreases yeast numbers. A low-starch diet also helps with weight loss. This is particularly useful for people who are overweight. People with food allergies and gluten hypersensitivity also often feel fitter when bread is omitted from the diet. In the case of a parasite infection, a low-starch diet can be followed alongside medical treatment.

Disadvantages of the Candida diet

The Candida diet essentially has no disadvantages. Nevertheless, many people find it difficult not to eat grain products. Especially in the Netherlands, we eat a lot of bread, pasta and starchy products. Bear in mind that Candida numbers do not always decrease when you follow a low-starch diet. In some cases, it is necessary to use medication. Consult a doctor for more information.

Conclusion

Do you have gastrointestinal complaints? We recommend having a gut flora analysis carried out. This determines the numbers and types of yeasts in the stool. High numbers of Candida can cause various symptoms, such as flatulence, a bloated abdomen and fatigue. Candida can also cause symptoms outside the intestines, such as abnormalities of the mucous membrane of the mouth or anus. Women may have Candida overgrowth in the vagina and men in the urethra. If Candida numbers are high, a Candida diet may help. It helps the intestinal wall recover. Follow this diet for 4 weeks and then have a follow-up test carried out.
